It Takes a Village

Making an impact takes a village and Ecolab’s recent social initiative with Hilton Hotel Kuching and charitable organization Hope Place is the proof. In line with Ecolab’s brand promise to make the world cleaner, safer and healthier, and Hilton Hotel’s ‘Travel with Purpose’ goal of doubling its social investments, a newly launched soap recycling project is a win-win-win for all involved: our customers, our community and our environment.

With Ecolab’s technology underpinning the recycling and sanitisation process, Hope Place volunteers will repackage and distribute half-used soaps from Hilton Kuching to underprivileged Malaysian families.

Ecolab Singapore and Malaysia managing director Ong Kian Tick said Ecolab Malaysia was proud to be part of the project saying, “We provide training and hygiene awareness. The intent of this soap recycling project resonates positively with our corporate commitment to make an impact on our community and promote sustainability. Achieving this in collaboration with our business and social partners further strengthens our value, impact and continuity.”

Ecolab Soap Recycling for Underprivileged Families
Hilton Kuching general manager Hamish Watts said this social initiative was aimed at elevating hygiene in the community in conjunction with Hilton’s 100th anniversary celebration. At the Hilton Kuching location alone, Watts reported that 50 kilogrammes of waste soaps can be generated in just two months.

“By the end of this month, all Hilton hotels in Malaysia will have a soap recycling project in place providing much needed sanitation for the underprivileged and enabling members of this community to support themselves,” said Watts.

“We have the platform to help those in need, so this collaboration comes at the perfect time for us to do this while also empowering the community,” remarked Chong Hai Eng, President of Hope Place whose mission is to provide basic necessities to improve the livelihood, health, and education of the underprivileged.

Malaysia’s Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk, Dr Sim Kui Hian, was represented by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting at the project launch event.

“I sincerely hope that more hotels will follow suit and support this caring and meaningful initiative,” said Dr Sim.
